Adisha

Adisha is the band leader and music director of Diversity.   He provides vocals, plays lead keyboards, violin and piano accordion. Adisha is an accomplished violinist, having played violin since the age of 5 and awarded grade 8 exam certification at the age of 17.  He also played piano since the age of 12 and played in a number of school orchestras.  He later learned to play piano accordion and studied music theory and composition under the professional guidance of Mr. James Edwards, popular post-war composer.  In May 1998 he played accordion for Billericay Operatic Society's production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.

Adisha enjoys playing classical, pop, rock and the infectious 6/8 beat and melodies of Sri Lankan Baila.  Adisha enjoys the music of popular Sri Lankan bands such as Gypsies and Sunflower as well as the more traditional music and songs of Pandit W. D. Amaradeva, Victor Ratnayake and Nanda Malini.  For keyboard playing he draws inspiration from the prodigious work of A. R. Rahman, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, James Horner and the late Michael Kamen.  He is also a keen fan of classical Sri Lankan and Hindi music and has been known on more than one occasion to sing songs too!

Adisha's interest in classical music extends to Indian raga.  In June 1999, Adisha started learning Indian music from Pandit Sain Trikha, colleague of maestro Ravi Shankar, learning ragas for violin such as Kamaj, Yaman Kalyan and Pilu using eastern notation (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni, Sa, etc.)  Adisha also enjoys the discipline and challenge of the craft of writing music too.

In August 2000, Adisha teamed up with popular Sri Lankan singer Raju Bandara and then performed music for Visharada Gunadasa Kapuge in the UK.  He was also responsible for writing and arranging music for Neela Wickramasingha's show 'Ran Tikiri Sina' (May 2000).  In February 2001, Adisha was asked to provide music for the Ari Dissanayake's version of the Sri Lankan stage play, Nari Bána.  He has also arranged music for stage shows with Annesley Malawana, Indrani Perera and Rajiv Sebastian (October 2004) and Mariazelle Gunathilake (November 2004).

Aside from the musical activities, Adisha has a BSc in Molecular Biophysics (University of Leeds); a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (University of Greenwich), and MSc in Information Technology (University of Liverpool).   Adisha currently works for a local authority in Essex employed as an Information Systems Analyst.  He also lectured Adult Education evening classes in CLAIT (Computer Literacy and Information Technology).

Rohan

Rohan

‘It all began when I was in school!’  Rohan always wanted to become a drummer and  was 8 years old when he got his first set of drums.  When he was aged fourteen, he formed his first band called ‘Friday On My Mind’.

We performed at every college do, weddings and parties and after I left school I joined many a band in Colombo.  I won the coveted Observer Talent Contest for Instrumentalists in 1974 and after that I was in demand because I was the best drummer in Sri Lanka and of course one of the best singers!  To name a few bands I played for were ‘Pearl, Cristal Set, Talk of the Town, and The Moonstones.’

With the Moonstones he played at the Mount Lavinia Hotel night club called ‘The Little Hut’ every night for 3 years.

Rohan left Sri Lanka in 1978 for Germany and there he formed his own band called The Cats Eye and toured Europe for four years ‘it was the best time of my life!’.  He then settled down in Austria and formed a band called ‘The Fernandos’ with Austrian musicians until he came to the UK and joined Diversity.  Rohan as with all of Diversity’s members is very passionate about music saying ‘I won’t regret one moment of my life as a musician and I shall continue to do so until I die’.  He adds, ‘I should say I was very fortunate to be able to perform with some fantastic musicians back in Sri Lanka and in Europe.  I love to sing and as you know I am very good at it!’
